“You’ve been living in a dream world, Neo.”
I woke up the other day with this great idea for a DJ post and pretty much had the whole thing outlined before fully awakening. Unfortunately, by the time I got up and got to the computer most of it was lost but it had something to do with the world being a simulation. Yes, I had just seen Blade Runner, what of it?
Anyway, I decided to take Thrill’s going insane theme in a different direction …
There are astrophysicists that believe that our world could be just a simulation like the Sims or the Matrix and I deeply love navel-gazing. After a couple weeks of truth being stranger than fiction, it looks like The Matrix has been recently upgraded with the Chaos Patch without properly testing it first.
My husband and I used to play The Sims 2. Ultima Online became unplayable and there weren’t any suitable replacements yet. We had a lot of fun with this game and you could do some really weird shit that foretold the situation that we have today with lack of empathy. For those that never played, “Sims” are fake people that you make go through life. In effect, you are their God and you can be a benevolent one or a cruel one.
In the standard game you have to manage their time and make sure that they eat, collect the mail, pay bills, go to work and if they marry and have kids, take care of the kids. If they don’t take care of the kids a creepy clown will visit the kids and protective services will come get them.
We bought some expansion packs and downloaded some free accessories and we found cheat codes that gave unlimited resources. We built big houses with basements full of dungeon cells and lured some Sims down there. We watched as over time each one pissed themselves and died. The Grim Reaper carefully placed their urns on a shelf we put up. Each remaining Sim would cry as the Reaper collected the remains; they would beg for help and curse us. Many Sims died in this dank, fetid shithole.
Just imagine if they were sentient. What kind of monster would put a sentient being through that? Am I a psychopath for laughing at a Sim pissing itself and suffering? I don’t think so, but it serves as a foreshadowing of how we treat people when we think that they are just avatars in a software program or video game. World of Warcraft players are very familiar with this phenomenon but it is spilling out onto non-gamer populations as people forget that there are real people behind names like nooblet#345. I have seen some incredible conversations between strangers online and I am losing faith in my fellow man. Not that we are just mean but mean and stupid.
Does it ever feel to you like life is just getting patched once in a while? I am not just talking about advancing technology, but that is part of it. All of a sudden there is this huge change as everyone absorbs the latest news cycles. Our internal programming determines how we interpret this feed and what we accept or reject and how we react. Periodically, something just goes haywire like the Las Vegas shooting or grown men getting felt up in Hollywood. Makes you wonder just what the fuck is going on.
- Déjà Vu – glitch in the Matrix, weird shit, discordance. You can also play something that we have already played before. If you like something that someone played earlier play it again! Why should you care?
- The Sims – You know, I sometimes did feel bad about booting up Sims 2 and going to the mall just to see what would happen. All kinds of chaos broke out, houses caught fire, there were deaths. Play songs about neglect and treating people like shit. Keeping it mean and stupid.
- Blade Runner – Androids dreaming of electric sheep. Play some of your favorite electronica.
