Nothing instills confidence, allays all fears, and gives us that warm fuzzy feeling more than learning anything”Meets minimum standards”. Interviewing a new daycare facility and the lady in charge tells you ,”We meet minimum safety standards for care and supervision”? Great, sign our kids up. Filling a prescription at the local pharmacy and the druggist tells you that they meet the minimum safety standards when filling drug orders? No worries, I’m sure that you won’t get Prednisone in place of your Viagra. Gee, wouldn’t be nice to find someone who provides a valuable service for us to meet medium standards or even exceed standards?

The military is finding that the latest crop of new potential recruits is too soft, too out of shape, and not able to (wait for it………) meet minimum standards for physical fitness. What to do? Why, lower the standards, of course!

Earlier this month, researchers at The Heritage Foundation reported that more than 70 percent of 17- to 24-year-olds in America today are ineligible to join the military under current Pentagon requirements. About half of that group did not meet physical fitness or health requirements for service.

We aren’t talking SEAL school, Ranger Training, or even Officer’s Candidates School, this is basic f#cking training, where you learn really simple shit like how to make a bed, how to march, and how a shoot an M-16.  You know, the real assault rifle.

I don’t know how many vets we have reading our blog, I’m a vet, physical training in basic training is the very definition of minimum standards. For someone in shape, you can do it in your sleep, if you are not in shape (and really, who is stupid enough to join the military and not be in shape?) it can be a living hell. But it matters not what field you go into or what job you have while in the military, all must learn basic rifle skills. If you can’t take a hill or storm a beach, what good are you?

Thornberry said those statistics “are not a commentary on just the military. It’s a commentary on what is happening in society.”

Yep, a fat, out of shape society whose only physical activities involve exercising the thumbs on a game controller.

And lest you think this phenomenon is unique to the military, guess what?  That cop you just called to come save your life doesn’t meet the minimum standards either. The old saying ,”When seconds count, the police are minutes away”, yeah, it might take him that long trying to extricate his fat butt out of the patrol car.

Lowering any standards is usually a bad idea. Some computer nerd wants to join up and work in cryptology or cyber warfare? That’s great, start going to the gym, buy a Stairmaster. These really are minimum standards, not hard to meet. Besides being combat ineffective, do we really want those one step away from a heart attack defending our country?

For someone in shape, you can do it in your sleep, if you are not in shape (and really, who is stupid enough to join the military and not be in shape?) It does happen. That’s totally the fault of military recruiters, in my opinion. There really should be a fitness test during enlistment, but they’re too quick to say “Free college! SIGN! SIGN! DO IT NOW!” To anyone who may read this who is thinking about joining the military or becoming a cop: do not expect them to get you in shape in basic training or academy. You’ll struggle… Read more »

This is what’s come of getting rid of PE in school. The military is one of the few places left where you have to earn your way through, or at least it was.

It isn’t really. It had moved from that ideal meritcracy when I was in during the mid to late 90’s. If it ever really existed. The most successful enlisted people are simply good at memorizing manuals. The most successful officers are the most skillful politicians.

Judge Dredd, Pro Se

We’ve done a lot of harping on how sloth public employees are over the years. How undeserving they are of a paycheck many time, and how much corruption labor unions instill in these employees. I think the problem with the military is just how much of a sacred cow it is polyically. If you dare to question the military, it’s effectiveness, or the amount of resources it takes to supply and train them you can call it quits in politics. It’s literally the only institution in America we can’t throw enough money at, and certainly the only institution in America… Read more »

But they are not lowering the standards to save money. They can’t find suitable recruits because the general population is too fat and soft. I guess it depends on where you live. My son is 5″11 and 125lbs. People can’t wait to tell me that he is too skinny, needs to eat, blah blah blah. Fuck you, he eats when he is hungry and enough to not be hungry. I think that he has healthy eating habits (he could eat more veggies, yes). He also likes to walk. These same people go on and on about how much weight they… Read more »

Rich and William (Thrill!),

Was wondering what happened to you guys as well. I would wander over to RTFTLC about once or twice a year and was a bit surprised at what I found. Saw a post there that led me here and there you go.

Hope all is well and hopefully I’ll be by more than once a year!

You should! We’ve improved since our VO days. We have the technology. We made it better than it was. Better, stronger, faster.
