Nothing instills confidence, allays all fears, and gives us that warm fuzzy feeling more than learning anything”Meets minimum standards”. Interviewing a new daycare facility and the lady in charge tells you ,”We meet minimum safety standards for care and supervision”? Great, sign our kids up. Filling a prescription at the local pharmacy and the druggist tells you that they meet the minimum safety standards when filling drug orders? No worries, I’m sure that you won’t get Prednisone in place of your Viagra. Gee, wouldn’t be nice to find someone who provides a valuable service for us to meet medium standards or even exceed standards?
The military is finding that the latest crop of new potential recruits is too soft, too out of shape, and not able to (wait for it………) meet minimum standards for physical fitness. What to do? Why, lower the standards, of course!
Earlier this month, researchers at The Heritage Foundation reported that more than 70 percent of 17- to 24-year-olds in America today are ineligible to join the military under current Pentagon requirements. About half of that group did not meet physical fitness or health requirements for service.
We aren’t talking SEAL school, Ranger Training, or even Officer’s Candidates School, this is basic f#cking training, where you learn really simple shit like how to make a bed, how to march, and how a shoot an M-16. You know, the real assault rifle.
I don’t know how many vets we have reading our blog, I’m a vet, physical training in basic training is the very definition of minimum standards. For someone in shape, you can do it in your sleep, if you are not in shape (and really, who is stupid enough to join the military and not be in shape?) it can be a living hell. But it matters not what field you go into or what job you have while in the military, all must learn basic rifle skills. If you can’t take a hill or storm a beach, what good are you?
Thornberry said those statistics “are not a commentary on just the military. It’s a commentary on what is happening in society.”
Yep, a fat, out of shape society whose only physical activities involve exercising the thumbs on a game controller.
And lest you think this phenomenon is unique to the military, guess what? That cop you just called to come save your life doesn’t meet the minimum standards either. The old saying ,”When seconds count, the police are minutes away”, yeah, it might take him that long trying to extricate his fat butt out of the patrol car.
Lowering any standards is usually a bad idea. Some computer nerd wants to join up and work in cryptology or cyber warfare? That’s great, start going to the gym, buy a Stairmaster. These really are minimum standards, not hard to meet. Besides being combat ineffective, do we really want those one step away from a heart attack defending our country?
