****Spoilers at a minimum****  If you want, you can skip to the music part.

My family went to see Ready Player One in the theatre the day it came out. My son was reading it for Lit class and he loved the book. The teacher was offering a low grade replacement for watching the movie and doing some analysis questions on the book vs. movie. We all loved the movie, even Dad and I, who had not read the novel. As gamers, the virtual eye candy was really fun with coins splatting all over the place and fantastic characters and scenes. It was the type of movie where it was pretty much all action and the 2 1/2 hours goes by very quickly. It has hit several box office milestones and looks like it is a big hit.  I am thrilled to see my son getting so excited about a book.  That is also a milestone in HIS life and for that alone, I will remain partial to the story.  I also owe his Lit teacher a great bottle of something.

My son was glowing as he left the theatre. RP1 was his Star Wars. Having spent over a month analyzing the book in class, his only real complaint was so many details left out of the movie. The rest of the changes did not bother him. Welcome to book vs. movie, Kid.

And then there were the copious 80’s pop culture references to games, songs, movies, characters, hair, everything. It was an 80’s ‘palooza including the uber geeky guy that owns the Oasis. So, we are going to stick to the 80’s this week.

****Music Part****

Play us your favorite 80’s songs. This can be songs, videos, movie soundtracks, all 80’s welcome. I have never been much of an 80’s person, but there is really good music from that era. I had a lot of fun putting these dedications together.  It sucked when I saw dates like “1979” and “1990”.

Here are your dedications this week:

Spootyjim – Mr. Brownstone

Thrill –   Smokestack Lightning

Zurvan – Jump

Santino –  Orange Crush

WVR –  Sister Christian

ilovecress –  Run Runaway

Grendel –  Owner of a Lonely Heart

Night Ranger, eh? Well, it does take me back to a simpler time, like these guys:

And now a public service message, or “I’m doing this so I don’t have to go to jail after getting busted for possession”:

Hah! Our kids’ school had their annual fundraiser last night and it was an 80s theme! I dressed up as Magnum PI. I saw a lot of crimped hair, which of course means people still have crimpers. Amazing!

I’ve ruined my kids. They love 70’s and 80’s music and hate everything that their peers like. Thrilla was griping that somebody was blasting Taylor Swift at school yesterday, ffs.

Sweetest Thing

Another thing I ruined my kids with. Thrill Jr can recite almost the entire script of that movie. It’s fun when we walk through the grocery store and he starts doing the entire “He’s an asshole, sir” bit (substituting “buttholes” for “assholes”) loudly as we peruse the aisles.

You and me both. That’s the first pop star I can remember crushing on at the ripe old age of 9.

In honor of WW3 starting, It’s the End of the World as We Know It.
