This is going to be a sports post.
Lots going on in the sporting world of late but, as if the title didn’t give it away, it is time to rag on those French weenies.
Serena Williams is playing her first major after giving birth. She was ranked #1. Instead of giving her a seed, the French Open event organizers have decided to give her only a wild card draw, this means she will not be seeded and have to face the top seeds in the early rounds. This will make Serena angry, you don’t want to face Serena when she is angry. It was within their power to do the right thing and give her a seed, f*cking French.
Justified won the Preakness over the weekend, the Triple Crown is still a possibility. I have always enjoyed horse racing and going to the track. 3 of my top 25 movies of all time are horse racing movies (The Black Stallion, Seabiscuit and Secretariat). Next up is the Belmont, where horses go to die. 1 1/2 miles long, it separates the good horse from the great; this is why the triple crown is so difficult.
We can talk hockey. How about those Vegas Golden Knights? 500 to 1 odds at the beginning of the season, the GK’s are an expansion team and they just made it to the Stanley Cup, unheard of.
Also in Hockey, they just had the World Championships. Sweden won (my wife will be happy) but the better news is that the USA beat Canada for the bronze. Canada was just placed on suicide watch, all sharp objects confiscated.
On to the NBA. Santino, here is your chance to weigh in on Casey getting fired. TBH, I predicted this after that shameful performance against Lebron and Co. It may seem extreme given their regular season record, but when a superior team lies done like dogs, especially in the playoffs, extreme action is required. If the Raptors had Steve Kerr or Brad Stevens, I believe they would have won that series. Several years ago I read Bobby Knight’s book. He talks about his perfect season at Indiana. He knew going in that he had the best team in the nation so any slip ups along the way was on him, any loss could only be attributed to him not doing his job.
So far the conference finals have been a snooze fest. No close games, most decided early in the fourth quarter, tonight will be closer;
Celtics/Cavs- The Cavs will win again tonight to even it up. Yes, The Celtics are nails at home, but they are a young team. If Lebron can get any help at all, and motivating his team mates is on him and not the coach (he essentially is the coach) and stay close in the fourth quarter? As they say, anything can happen. Boston is favored because they have more games at home, if will probably come down to the seventh game but never count the GOAT out.
The Dub’s beat Houston by 40 last night, is it over………………….not by a long shot. I thought it was kinda funny having Curry’s mom scold him for using profanity on national TV ,”This is my fucking house”, he aint lying. The wild card for me was the health of the Warriors. Both Curry and Durant are still a bit gimpy. Dramond is still Dramond and his big mouth will probably cost him a game, this will hurt if it happens. The Rockets were the best team in the NBA at the end of the season. I don’t expect them to lie down but all GS has to do is win at home.
The NFL- Some new rules coming this season. An enhanced “targeting” rule, lowering the head and making the helmet a weapon, will be tried with possible ejections, anything that will make the game safer. I see mass confusion in trying to enforce this new rule with hardly any ejections at all, too bad. For the first year, until players get comfortable with this, how about a 25 yard penalty instead of an ejection?
They finally fixed “The Catch” rule. “Surviving the ground” is out, now just 2 step process, control and performing a football move like a third step is all that is needed.
No more kickoffs, a permanent touch-back on the 25 yard line to start each offensive series. This is another effort to make the game safer since a concussion was five times more likely to occur during kickoffs.
