Biggest happening this weekend is the report that Senator John McCain has died.

It’s tough for me to comment on his life and legacy because I have such mixed emotions about him and his career.  I equally hate to say anything bad about him because he’s dead and hate to say anything nice about him because, well, I can’t think of too much.

McCain holds the distinction of being the only person I ever voted for president whom I regret voting for.  It’s not because I’m glad Obama won.  I’m not.  It’s that McCain has always represented what is to me one of the worst sorts of career politicians, particularly for a Republican.  I never liked his vanity, his delight in spitting in the eyes of GOP voters and officials, or his political corruption.  Later on, I really couldn’t stand his open borders attitude or warmongery.

Voting for him was distasteful to me and it didn’t help that his campaign was utterly embarrassing.  Worse, I can’t think of a single positive thing he’s done ever since his campaign failed.

So that’s it.  That’s as much of a eulogy as I can give him.  I’m not going to say I’m happy he’s dead.  I’m not that kind of person.  But I’m glad he’s out of the Senate.  I offer condolences to his family out of consideration for him being a husband and father, nothing more.

Anyway, open thread.  What’s going on out there?

Yeah, Mac definitely has a mixed legacy to say the least. This is the same guy who supported campaign finance reform while hanging around with crooks from the Keating Five scandal. He also thought that starting a war with Russia over Georgia was a swell idea. And one of his final moments, the health care vote, was literally a middle finger (or thumb) to Donald Trump. At the same time, he was a war hero, one of the few we have had still living, and he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind when he felt like it, although unlike Trump… Read more »

Well said WG.

He was an American Hero. He was also the poster child for term limits in Congress. His long political career taints the memory of his service. You said it well, Will. I’m also not cheering his death, but I am grateful he no longer represents me in the Senate.

Trump should order the flag to continually go up and down, with no explanation, just for laughs.

This is…the death of CNN:

Either Davis is lying to BuzzFeed when he claims he was the anonymous source for the CNN piece or, perhaps more likely, “CNN deliberately lied to its audience about Davis refusing to comment on the story when, in fact, Davis was one of the anonymous sources on which the CNN report depended, and CNN claimed Davis refused to comment in order to hide Davis’ identity as one of their anonymous sources.”

well, now, it looks like it was the Chinese that Hack Hillary’s server. It also seems that the FBI leaked stores to the press, and then used those stories as basis for the FISA warrants. The Whole Lanny Davis story that Chen Knew trump knew about the Trump tower meeting and the Clintion emails is busllshit. Beto O’Rourke, who is runnign against Ted Cruz, is a slimball. Teh jacksonville Shooter, history of mental issues and police visits, bought his gun, in Maryland,1 month prior to the event in Fl, passed background checks.. Seattle judge blocks… Read more »

oh and you know how deep Mantafort was with the Ruskis? Well his good partner Rick Davis, that is McCains aide, campaign manager , Fixer, was the other part of the Lobbying firm Davis Manafort. Yes the very firm that set up McCain with Oleg Deripaska, you know that slimy Russian that was trying to meet with trump. the Same Russki that McCain spent his 70’s birthday with on his Yacht………….

The midterms are getting interesting. In Florida, Andrew Gillum will now be running for Governor against the Trump guy, Ron DeSantis in his bid to become Florida’s first black governor. In Arizona, two women are running against each other for Jeff Flake’s seat.

South Africa’s land grabbers are gun grabbers, too:
