Happy Halloween everyone! My favorite holiday is almost here so even though I am early, I pretty much consider the month of October to be fair game Halloween-wise. My family erected our little Texas Chainsaw Massacre scene in the yard. I meant to compile a YouTube playlist for trick or treaters. Hey, maybe you guys could help me with that!
Many of you have probably already seen the news – Megyn Kelley is the latest celebrity to fall victim to “blackface”, whereby a white person thinks it is OK to smear black shit on their face and pretend to be black. For some reason, each year at Halloween, someone famous forgets his or her self and either dons a costume or defends someone that did. While I do not think of it as a major problem, I can see where some people might think otherwise given its checkered past. As a white person, I am completely cool with leaving that off my list of possible Halloween costumes. I mean, there are so many better options …
I am also completely cool with dressing up temporarily as just about anything else. In my days, I have seen some weird shit on Halloween. Our biggest concern was “did we get the costume short enough to be sexy?” when we chopped up the pattern or altered some crap we bought at the thrift store. The goal was to get the costume, whatever it was, to be sexy enough to get the guy in the baby diaper or dressed as a used tampon to flirt with us and buy us beer. We were pretty shallow, but that was pretty typical back then; it is only today that we have a backlash against sexy costumes. So when I see people complaining about little girls dressing as Moana (a fictional character no less!), or in some other international garb I do what anyone else should do. I ignore it. One day per year dressing as something else is not appropriation, IMHO.
Anyone doing anything interesting for Halloween? For the last several years mine has been mostly dressing up on one of my old costumes and handing out candy since we don’t have to accompany our son anymore. I have started enjoying watching the kids come by in their costumes. We have fairly good foot traffic and I give out a couple of bags of candy each year.
Play us some songs about:
- Cultural Appropriation – This is people pretending to be or singing about other cultures. As usual, video content applies, and in this case can be the most fun!
- Halloween! – Play your favorite Halloween songs. Whatever makes Halloween Halloween musically is appropriate. One of my favorite parts of Halloween is the music.
- Halloween Videos – Good Halloween scenes for the kiddos knocking at the door! That would be a lot of fun. Probably have the sound off, just creepy videos. That is, if I can get Dave to set up the TV out there and it isn’t too rainy.
