So, we said goodbye to George Herbert Walker Bush, or “Bush 41”  this week.  Actually, as I am writing, they are still transporting his casket to the Bush Presidential Library.

I did not vote for him back in 1988.  In 1988, I was going through a bad time in my life and politics was the farthest thing from my mind.  There was no constant opinion thrown at me and I wasn’t terribly ideological.  It was pretty simple really; I didn’t like Reagan much so I didn’t like Bush either.  I didn’t vote that year because we were moving and I didn’t get registered, but I am pretty sure I wouldn’t have voted for him regardless.

Fast forward 30 years and I do look at him differently.  I like how he and Barbara did the whole “death do you part” thing for reals.  I mean, 74 years is a long time and with the death of a child thrown in, too.  Those two really meant it.  Unfortunately, I can’t comment much on his presidency, only to say that the whole time he was President my life was in turmoil and I was only transiently aware of who was running the show.

At the other end of the 90’s was the election of his son, George W. Bush, or “Bush 43”.  This was another tumultuous time in my life with a divorce and another move.  I did not vote for Bush 43 either, but I was aware of politics by then with the whole Clinton impeachment and controversy with Paula Jones, et. al.  I preferred Gore to Bush, but was unimpressed with Gore since his wife  Tipper was involved in that weird-ass PMRC controversy in the music business that Dave Mustaine in Megadeth wrote a song about.  I am not overly fond of censorship.

Basically, the Bush Presidencies bookended a pretty tumultuous period in my life, but ended in better, calmer waters later on.

No dedications this week other than for Bush 41.  Please play songs that you were into in that time frame or songs that remind you of Bush 41.

For mine, I was into cheesy hair metal like Skid Row in the late 80’s.

18 And Life – Skid Row

Slave To The Grind – Skid Row

Then on to grunge in about 1990:

We Die Young – Alice in Chains

Song for 41:

Faithfully  – Journey
