Alright. We’ve had a bout of music thread fatigue in recent months, I think. There’s been too little participation and it’s time to acknowledge it.
My friends: we are played out. Not that there’s any shame in that. Most FM radio stations are too. The quality of the music hasn’t changed. It was great then but now it’s tired.
For example, I was listening to my once-favorite FM alternative rock station and they started playing Sex and Candy by Marcy’s Playground. I actually groaned. It’s not that it’s a terrible song. I’m just utterly sick of it and don’t think it should be played anywhere ever again. Sex and Candy has been played more than any one-hit wonder of its tier deserves. Nobody should have to hear it.
Well, the quality of DJ threads hasn’t changed either has it? We’re still making good ones. Yet it seems that nobody has any different songs in their hearts anymore. It’s time to do as my favorite fictional character, Kylo Ren, says: “Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.” This week, we must bury the songs that are played out, painful as it may be.
This week’s categories:
- Not This, That – First, play a song that is tired and overplayed and then add a similar substitute that never got due appreciation. As an example, Smells Like Teen Spirit should never be played again on the radio. I’m over it. Been over it for 20 years. How about Mr Moustache instead? Don’t cry about it. If you really want people in the future to appreciate Nirvana, they should know about more than the same five songs and the covers they did for Unplugged.
- Kill It If You Have To – Share any songs that you personally feel like you’ve overplayed for the past two years on our music threads. Resolve that you’re now burying them and won’t play them again in the name of sparking a creative renaissance on future threads or whatever.
- Retire, Already – Identify those artists who are still making music after long, successful careers and are overdue to admit that they should just admit that it’s time to hang it up. Support your case with a recent example.
First up is a video I thought I’d share about the development of Nu Metal. I found it interesting and worth sharing.
Thises or Thats
Fight for Your Right to Party, out. Root Down, in.
Song 2 by Blur must be put to sleep. Awaken, Trailerpark.
I’m retiring KMFDM’s Megalomaniac, Psycho Killer by Talking Heads, and Bon Jovi’s Bad Medicine from my future DJ thread selections. Played out.
Kill Your Producer
Shit Mirror by NIN. YAAAAAAAAAAWN, Trent. You’re way too old for this.
Let’s start burying. It’s springtime and I’m ready for new life to grow.
