Wow, it’s been a while. The RVS overlords went and changed everything in wordpress, so I have no idea what this is going to look like (us old guys and change, glazed eyes and panic sets in).
Not sure if this is going to garner any traction, if not I’ll let it just die on the vine, but I thought it would be fun to throw up a world cup ladies edition post in case anyone is watching.
Last go around, a year ago with the men, there were about half a dozen of us interested, and who knows, this just might bring out some sports fans that have been absent of late, me included.
As you can tell by the image, France is the host country, a perfect place to play soccer. The last few days have been in the 70’s, the venue’s are pristine and the French are soccer fanatics, in a good way. The French men won the last world cup and from what I’ve read so far the French ladies are equally good and want their bite of the apple. Playing at home in front of their own fans, they will be formidable.
The USA women are the champs and they go into this event with a world ranking of number one. In the states they are rock stars. They have a platform and a persona unrivaled by any other female athletes. They are articulate, photogenic, patriotic, charismatic, and might I say as a whole very attractive (sorry, I’m a guy). The nucleus of the team is essentially unchanged since the last championship, that bodes well, but other squads have improved.
It didn’t take long for controversy to appear. Yesterday the USA ladies beat Thailand 13-0, of course I watched it. Almost immediately after the match , charges of bullying, running up the match, piling on, essentially acting like the ugly American flooded twitter. Obviously none of these complainers know anything about soccer. I’m sympathetic about the perception of running up the score, I am, I get the sports propriety of fair play and respect for the opponent. But in soccer the only way to let up on the gas is to substitute in second tier players and give your stars a breather, this was done by the American coach and still goals were being made. Another complaint was excessive celebrating after each goal, ridiculous. Girls like to hug, who cares? Unless they want to install NFL like restrictions for end zone celebrations, you want to limit the celebrating, keep their shots from hitting the back of the net.
As mentioned before in other sports posts, with international events I always root for the host nation so an American/French final would be sweet but we got a long way to go before that.
Soccer is not as popular here as in other countries but with the success of the US women, people are watching. And what great times we live in, people all over the world get to see their team compete on the other side of the globe, live.
So, if anyone is watching, wants to plug their team or has anything of soccer interests, lets have it.
